Film Language: Lighting
PICTURE 1
This picture has a low-key lighting simply because half of the ladies face is a shadow. It is also a back lighting because you can tell it comes from behind as it goes through some of her face. The effect which has been created by this photo is that this character is a femme fatale. This is because of the prop she is using (the cigar) and the shadow that has been created on her face.The shadow shows that she may have two types of personality; One which she is nice to others and then the other which may show that she has a dark side in her.
PICTURE 2
This is another low key lighting because the only thing shown in this picture is her face. The lighting also comes in from the top. By looking at this photo, I came under the impression that she may be trapped in the small dark room. This is because she is leaning against a wall, in a pitch black room which could suggest that she is in a basement as it has been expressed by the lighting through her face. Therefore, this is why she is looking at the light so she could be lucky and get some help.
PICTURE 3
With the photo shown above, this is a high key lighting as you can't really see that many shadows, bearing one or two as he is wearing a crown and the lighting is also from the top and back. I believe this because this has shown a 3D image of the character and the only way to get this effect is if you have the lighting coming in from every angle of the human. The effect that has been shown is that he looks like a very superior man. The reasons being is because of how he is dressed and his facial impressions. The crown and he serious facial impressions could suggest that he is the king of wherever he is from and could be quite angry because someone may not have done something that he demanded from that. With his hands holding onto his chain could suggest he is going to torture that person.
PICTURE 4
This is very similar to the first picture. First of all, this is a low key lighting and the lighting is coming in from the top. I came under the impression that this guy also has two personalities by looking at the shadows on his face and the prop he was carrying (the gun). I think that this guy must be a police inspector simply because he is wearing a suit, he's carrying a gun and has this serious look about himself. However, due to the shadows created on his face, he must be one of those police officers that are good at the beginning of the movie but later on, he turns his back on everyone and turns into a villain.
PICTURE 5
With this picture it is more low-key lighting and is of course taken from behind. This photo shows that she is one of those character that are all about glamour by the way her hair looks. By this photo, she looks really terrified. One of the reasons I came under this impression is because she is up against the wall and her facial expression which suggests she is screaming really loud by how wide she has opened her mouth.
PICTURE 6
This picture is high-key lighting as the lighting isn't coming from the back. Also, it doesn't fit any of the angle categories, top and under but it comes under back lighting which is coming in from the blinds in which the lady is leaning on. I believe that this is a romance movie where someone will stab the lady in the back. I believe this due to the lighting as it is facing the protagonist back and doesn't notice it happening. Therefore, eventually in this movie, this woman could potentially get stabbed in the back.
PICTURE 7
In this black and white image, you can already tell that it is going to be a high-key lighting as the lighting is coming from the back and it forms a body shape of the four people. I believe that these protagonists are apart of the early gangs from the 1960s and are after some people. This is because of the props they are holding. For example, one of the is holding a bat. Therefore, I think this is an old action film. The shadows also resemble someone who may be going through a tunnel, which could be their secret hideout if they were ever getting into trouble.
PICTURE 8
The photo shown with this lady is a low-key lighting and the lighting has come in from the top which has gone straight through her face and bounced onto the wall. The shadows on her face shows that she is a femme fatale. The reason for this is because, again, half of her face is a shadow and the other half is filled with light. This, therefore, shows that her personalities differs each time. Sometimes she's this nice lady but most the time she is this horrible person who turns their back on someone. On the other hand, this photo can also tell that she is this innocent lady as she is leaning against this wall and appears to be frightened by something that is in front of her. Or she could be in shock because someone who she thought that didn't exist, does (all because of the facial expression).
PICTURE 9
As you can tell, this is a high-level lighting due to the fact that the lighting is coming in from the back and shows the protagonists full appearance in 3D. The lighting is also coming in from the top which is going through her face which is creating a shadow on her neck which only means that there is no lighting coming in from the top. As there is a bright light coming in from the top, this shows that the protagonist could be a very peaceful and not a harmful person. Bright shows a persons good side where as dark (shadow) shows someone's dark side and this protagonist doesn't have any shadows on his face bearing one or two on his neck.
PICTURE 10
This picture is a high level lighting and the angle the lighting is coming from is under. This is because the protagonist is at the top of the picture and looks like the photo is being taken in a basement. Also, I know this is a basement because it is pitch black and the only light you can see is from the window which is being reflected onto the protagonist. This lighting helps because it shows a glimpse of the protagonist. The character seems to be very intimidating because he is firstly wearing a baseball mask and secondly, he is carrying a weapon with him which he is obviously going to use to attack.
PICTURE 11
This photo is high level and the lighting is coming in from underneath. By how the lighting is done. Both these characters seem very different by the shadows. The man has a dark shadow where as the woman has a lot of light on her which could suggest that she is always the centre of attention in the movie or she is a very nice person in the movie, The man doesn't look like a person you could trust mainly due to his facial impression - he looks very serious and looks like the type that could change his personality in a blink of an eye. However, the woman looks like a very innocent and bright person hence why they have focused the light more onto her and not the man.

Film Language: Mise-en-scene
1) Find a distinctive still image and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson.
2) Find three film extracts on YouTube from films of different genres (e.g. horror, sci-fi, costume drama) and write a comparison of the mise-en-scene in each.
In this clip, it shows the protagonist escaping and searching something. As you can see, the main character was wearing some sort of armour which gave him some protection as he got caught by something in the middle of the clip. This gave me the impression that he is some sort of spy/agent. One of the main reasons I believe this is because firstly, he was carrying a gun (prop) which is what anyone, e.g. a soldier or spy would carry as some sort of protection. Another reason I came across as him being a soldier is because of his body language; he looked as if he was ready to go into war even if he was by himself. Also, he was all alone which straight away tells me that he is a spy because if you had watched movies, e.g. James Bond you would realise that he works independently. The protagonist was in a dark room and all of a sudden he saw this small device on the ground which is what you would normally see in a space movie.
This is a still image which has been taken from the movie 'If a Tree Falls'. I have chosen this picture because it shows a lot of different objects and is quite detailed, in terms of the setting and colour. First of all, this image shows a person who is standing all by himself in a deserted area, which completely looks destroyed. Behind him, are trees which gives away that this setting must be some sort of forest. The man himself looks to be very abnormal; He seems as if he isn't apart of this world as he is the only one in this deserted area. The weather in this still image seems to be very cold and cloudy which is relating to his body language as he seems to be very cold, hence why he has his hands in pocket and is also wearing a jacket. Behind the trees that are shown in the middle of the image, looks to be a mountain on the right and another one further on the left. Since he is in a deserted place, he could be from another planet (as said previously above) or it can suggest that he has nothing left of what was his. Once upon a time, he could've been a rich and wealthy person but now everything just went downhill for him which could link to the title of this movie/image 'If a tree falls'.

Fast & Furious 2009
This is a clip from the movie Fast and Furious from 2009. All you can see in the clip is three vehicles driving on a dead end road. There was one oil truck, a van and a regular car. This road looked quite dangerous at first because everywhere there were cracks in them and later on in the clip, you would see the road would've stopped and would've gone down the mountain if you continued going. The people from the car and van first gave me the impression that they were hi-jacking the oil truck so they can sell it and make money out of it. This is because the lady was on the oil truck and trying to release one of the oil tanks. The black car, that the main protagonist was driving, also showed that he was the villain. This is because the black car emphasises something bad was going on since the windows were also tinted which meant that no one would be able to tell who the people in the car were.
TOMB RAIDER
This is from the adventure movie Tomb Raider. In the beginning of the clip, you see a group of people with guns and also a stoned sculpture coming to life in this ancient Greek museum. This just shows that the whole movie is abnormal because no stone sculpture would ever come to life. Fast forwarding a little further, you would see the some stone sculpture picking up these gigantic swords to stop the main protagonist from shooting it. For some reason, the swords just went to him without him even picking it up which just shows how abnormal it is. All, at the end of the clip you see the protagonist jumping over another stone and jumping out of the building and then the other stone sculpture followed it out until it when into pieces.

Film Poster Analysis
1. Firstly, this film looks like a movie in space as by looking at the space ships at the bottom of the picture. As you can see, there are two people in that photo. The woman looks like the villain and the male looks like the hero. The reason I believe the woman is the villain is because of the prop she is using (the cigar) but mainly because of the lighting on her face which is creating a shadow which shows a contrast between her personality. One side of her face shows that she might have an evil side and the other side of her face shows that she may be pulling an act. This suggests that this lady is a femme fatale. 2. I think that this genre is Sci-Fi due to the space ships at the bottom and the big bold taglines which is almost creating that effect that this movie has something to do with space.
3. I believe that the target audience for this movie is aged between 25-50.
1. This films already looks like it is a parody due to the facial reactions of the stars in the picture. Another hint to this being a parody is because the name of the movie is 'Scary Movie' but at the the top of this poster, it has a tag line which says "Absolutely Hilarious" which straight away gives away that is a parody of what is meant to be a scary movie. I believe that this movie has taken some parts from "The Exorcist" because as you can see in the top left of this movie poster, it shows this lady which almost resembles how the lady from that movie looks, e.g. her hair and her facial expressions. 2. This is a mixture of comedy and horror but mainly comedy hence why it is a parody.
3. I would think that people from the age of 13-40 year old would watch this movie.
1.From my first impressions of looking at this movie poster, I think that this is a man who has gone from having everything to having nothing. The reason I think this is because of where he is and he is standing. The place he is standing suggests that the factories use to be his but now he might have bankrupted and this is the reason why he may be standing in the cold, miserable weather in his coat rather than being in his warm house. Him standing in front of this river seems like he wants to end his life because he is fed up with life.2. I believe that this is more of a Drama movie.
3. This is a movie which will stand out more to the older generations.
1. The first thing I had realised with this poster is the title of the movie and the star of the movie and how the photo was taken. The title says "I'm not scared" and the person is looking down at the camera but it appears to be a hole, which the star is looking down. Therefore, I think that this is a movie where this protagonist self believes that he can go down the mystery hole and isn't afraid to do so. 2. This is a thriller movie as said in the blue tagline.
3. I would say that this will appeal a target audience of people who aged between 15-25.
1. I think that this movie has got a lot to do with the title. The name of the movie is 'Sin City' which obviously states that they are in a city that is either filled with a lot of crime and is completely abnormal. I believe this because as you can see in the movie poster, two out of five stars are holding a gun which obviously states that the city they are living in is very dangerous.The lady in the far left looks like the villain simply because of her facial expressions and how she is dressed up.2. I would think this is an Action and Thriller movie.
3. This movie would be suitable to people aged between 15-30.
1. This is a very basic movie poster to analyse simply because of the tagline and the stars of the movie. This is a movie about pirates. I have come to this conclusion simply because of how one of the stars is dressed up as a pirate, the movie itself is called Pirates of the Caribbean and how above the tagline is a pirate ship. It also is talking about a death man's chest which, of course, involves death. This is also a movie which is based on what may of happened hundreds of years ago. 2. I would think this would come under the adventure genre due to the fact there is a ship on the poster,
3. This would attract an audience with the ages between 10-35.
1. Personally, this is a movie about an couple who are about to get married hence why the movie itself is called Bride and Prejudice. I also think that they have moved from India to the United States. This is because on the bottom right of the poster, it shows a group of Indian people and the famous Taj Mahal and on the other side of the poster shows a city which looks to be New York or San Francisco since it shows a lot of trees in the background.2. This is a combination of romantic and comedy simply because it says so in the tagline right at the top.
3. This is a movie which I believe anyone would be willing to watch it.
1. First of all, I think that the lady in the middle is the main protagonist of this movie. Also, I simply believe that this is a movie involving sports and following her parents footsteps. This is because she is dressed as if she is a kick boxer which is obviously a violent sport. Also, the title says "Million Dollar Baby", so this means that either one of her parents were a kick boxer or some sort of athlete and which is why she is known as the million dollar baby because of all the money her parents must've raised had been handed to her. Therefore, she is trying to continue one of her parents legacy. I believe that the person on the left is the main protagonists father and the one on the right (Morgan Freeman) is her trainer.2. I think that this is a sport films.
3. This looks like it's a violent movie, therefore I think that it is suitable for people aged between 15-40.
